The Green Craze Hits One Out of The Park (Green Ball Parks)

As the world becomes more and more conscious of the human effect on nature and the Earth in general, people are making more and more concerted efforts to follow what is known as ‘green’ concepts. There is even a certification called ‘Leeds’ (leadership in energy and environmental design) that certifies buildings as complying with a set of standards to make them green compliant.

The sports world has recently been bitten by the ‘green’ bug and more and more sports facilities are becoming ‘Leed’ certified structures. There are currently 139 sports facilities somewhere in the process of becoming Leed certified. This certification doesn’t just cover the structural aspect of the building, it also covers the day to day operation of it. Such things as how the building’s air handling equipment works down to their recycling. For instance, American Arlines Arena’s green aspects are the reflective material used for the roofing. This  material reflects the heat of the sun and reduces the need for artificially cooled air. They also have drought tollerant landscaping and underground parking.

Not all sports institutions are jumping on the green bandwagon, there have been approximately thirty-five new college and professional sports facilities that have not even made an attempt to qualify for Leeds Certification. In contrast, there are many venues that have been built green from the ground up, cleaning up and using previously unuseable sites, using green manufactured building products and incorporating green mechanisms into the buildings environmental and other features.
