In The Market For a New TV? What is the Green Choice

green guide,fuel savers

If you are into green electronics and saving energy,  the first thing to understand when thinking about purchasing a new TV, is that the old technology is actually more ecologically friendly than the new. The TVs of yesteryear with the bulbous backside not only takes less power to produce and run, it doesn’t contain the hazardous chemicals present in both types of new TVs. So if you want to go the greenest you can, stay with the old technology and acquire a converter that converts the digital signal to an analog signal you TV can interpret.

An LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) TV is exactly what the name implies. Electricity is conducted into the liquid crystal. To explain exactly how liquid crystal works would take much more space than available but generally electricity causes the liquid crystals to change characteristics, giving you your picture. The process and the final product both contain hazardous materials that can be very bad for the environment. The LCD TV has a fluorescent bulb that when blown, could mean the end of the TV’s life span. The disposal of such a device is a recipe for environmental damage, as breaking the sealed innards causes the release of multiple toxic chemicals.

Plasma TVs contain electrically charged phosphors. When the phosphors are subjected to energy, they produce superior picture quality which makes them a high demand product. In order for these TVs to perform their function, their byproduct is tremendous heat, this is the reason for the possibility of screen burn. The similarities between the LCD and plasma TVs are in the hazardous conditions caused by disposal.
