Making Your Own Biofuel – Is It Safe?
So you’re looking to save money on fuel, and you’ve decided to look into making your own bio-fuel. Is it possible?
In a word, yes, you can make your own. The question of safety is up for speculation. There are numerous people already engaged in making their own biodiesel and the ingredients are easy to come by. The first ingredient is extremely easy to come by, that is oil made from either vegetable or animal matter. (You cannot use petroleum based oils for this process). Triglycerides (from the oil) is made up of three long chain fatty acid molecules.
The next ingredient is either methanol, or ethanol. Methanol is a petroleum based chemical and cannot be produced in a home locations. Ethanol is a plant based chemical, you can produce ethanol at home, but making biodeisel with it is much more difficult and should not be attempted by beginners.
The next ingredient is lye, lye will be acting as a catalyst. It can be either potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide. (Always keep your lye in a very dry location) Potassium hydroxide is suggested for beginners.
As you can see, the ingredients are easy products to come by, but, if you decide you want to make your own biodeisel, do yourself and your neighbors a favor, research well, learn what you have researched and practice very strong safety measures. Also, make sure it’s legal where you live. Some states already have laws against it and others are on track to create laws against it.
